“We want passengers to be able to enjoy good food on board our trains, but food service costs today are greatly in excess of the revenue generated. This is unacceptable and unsustainable. Unless reforms are successfully put in place, the adverse economics of food service will jeopardize its existence. Amtrak is under a federal mandate to improve the margins on food service, or face the risk of losing it. Amtrak is deeply committed to reforming the way in which food service is delivered; the passengers who pay for this service and the taxpayers who subsidize it deserve nothing less.”
